LINCOLN — They sat down Wednesday to talk coaching, but it was the wrong place to be if you came for X’s and O’s or wanted to hear strategy from three former college football greats.

Tom Osborne, Bobby Bowden and Grant Teaff spent the hour at Lincoln North Star discussing the role that coaches play in the lives of student-athletes. They shared strong words and opinions about today’s issues and how times have changed, but how their influence must not.

“It’s important to realize, more than ever, that kids are looking for role models,” Osborne said.

The trio contributed in a roundtable format before a crowd of 1,000 in the event presented by the Nebraska Coaches Association and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. The framework for their discussion was based on Teaff’s recently published book — “A Coach’s Influence: Beyond the Game” — which the former Baylor coach said came about after he heard from coaches “exasperated” by what they were facing daily and feeling unprepared to deal with it.

Every other week, singer-actress Camille Metoyer Moten has a party and invites 2,000 of her friends. Facebook friends.

She calls them her Prayer Warriors, a mix of close friends and relatives, buddies in the theater community and fans of her frequent cabaret bookings.

Camille is one of the most accomplished and versatile singer-actresses in the city. The party is a chemotherapy treatment in the wake of breast cancer surgery.

About 10 to 15 Prayer Warriors typically show up at the Methodist Estabrook Cancer Center, at Camille’s invitation, to pray over her. Then they laugh so much together that the nurses occasionally have to shush them.

At a recent chemo party, a fellow patient was impressed when she saw the Prayer Warriors place hands on Camille’s chemo machine and ask God to kill all the bad cells, and only the bad cells.

So impressed, in fact, that she wheeled her chemo machine over and asked them to pray over it, too. Another patient requested chemo treatments only on days Camille and her Prayer Warriors were around.

Her way is all positive, with a capital P. And rock-solid faith, with a capital F. God is in charge.

“Felt the need to share this picture I took yesterday while in my house. We are currently stationed in Albuquerque NM. These boys got off their bikes at 5pm as colors and the National anthem started. They stood at attention in the direction of the flag and didn’t move until it was done. I was most impressed with the removal of their helmets. This made my day seeing this. Their parents are raising a couple of fine little men.”

Cuba seminary rises from near-extinction

HAVANA, Cuba (BP) — More than 70 students in Havana received diplomas July 5-6 through a partnership that has revived a Cuban seminary during the past eight years.
Western Cuba Baptist Theological Seminary in Havana, which was on the brink of extinction, has flourished under its partnership with Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, as pastors and church planters receive theological training for spreading the Gospel throughout the Caribbean island country.

Southwestern President Paige Patterson and missions professor Daniel Sanchez presided over the Havana seminary’s two graduation ceremonies.

“The interesting thing is that this is more graduates than they had students when we first started helping them, and this does not count all the from the extension centers,” Sanchez said. “They were rejoicing over not only the quantity but the quality of students that they have who are graduating, all of them active in churches throughout the convention.”

Bill O’Reilly takes on Obama and many black leaders

White people don’t force black people to have babies out of wedlock. That’s a personal decision; a decision that has devastated millions of children and led to disaster both socially and economically. So raised without much structure, young black men often reject education and gravitate towards the street culture, drugs, hustling, gangs. Nobody forces them to do that; again, it is a personal decision.

But the entertainment industry encourages the irresponsibility by marketing a gangster culture, hip hop, movies, trashy TV shows to impressionable children. In fact, President Obama has welcomed some of the worst offenders in that cesspool to the White House when he should be condemning what these weasels are doing. These so-called entertainers get rich while the kids who emulate their lyrics and attitude destroy themselves.

And then there is the drug situation. Go to Detroit and ask anyone living on the south side of the eight-mile road what destroyed their city? They will tell you narcotics. They know addiction leads to crime and debasement. But what do the race hustlers and limousine liberals yell about? The number of black men in prison for selling drugs. Oh, it’s so unfair. It’s a nonviolent crime and blacks are targeted. That is one of the biggest lies in the history of this country.

The thugs who sell hard drugs, no matter what color they are, deserve to be put away for long periods of time. They sell poison, they sell a product that enslaves and kills. They are scum.

When was the last time you heard the Congressional Black Caucus say that? How about Jackson and Sharpton? How about President Obama?

The solution to the epidemic of violent crime in poor black neighborhoods is to actively discourage pregnancies out of marriage, to impose strict discipline in the public schools, including mandatory student uniforms, and to create a zero tolerance policy for gun and drug crimes imposing harsh mandatory prison time on the offenders.

And finally, challenging the entertainment industry to stop peddling garbage. Hey listen up you greed heads, if a kid can’t speak proper English, uses the “f” word in every sentence, it’s disgraceful, it’s disrespectful — it’s disrespectful in his or her manner. That child will never, never be able to compete in the marketplace of America… never. And it has nothing to do with slavery. It has everything to do with you Hollywood people and you derelict parents. You’re the ones hurting these vulnerable children.

Zimmerman Emerges from Hiding to…Rescue SUV Crash Victims

Somewhere, the screenwriters for Sharknado are scoffing at the implausibility of this plot twist. Reality is stranger than fiction:

George Zimmerman, who has been in hiding since he was acquitted of murder in the death of Trayvon Martin, emerged to help rescue someone who was trapped in an overturned truck, police said today. Sanford Police Department Capt. Jim McAuliffe told ABC News that Zimmerman “pulled an individual from a truck that had rolled over” at the intersection of a Florida highway last week. Florida Highway Patrol is now handling the case, McAuliffe said. The crash occurred at the intersection of I-4 and route 417, police said. The crash site is less than a mile from where he shot Martin. It’s the first known sighting of Zimmerman since he left the courtroom following his acquittal last week on murder charges for the death of Martin.
