Last week I had Dr. Laura on the radio. I don’t always agree with her but I do respect her values and I am blessed by her love for kids.
However on this day the good doctor was wrong. A lady who called in said her daughter was dating a man from a cult. The cult was Mormonism. Dr. Laura told the lady she doesn’t call that a cult but a religion. She also told the lady they do a lot of good works. I agree they do a lot of good works but lets look at some of their doctrine in deciding if they are a cult or not.
Jesus is a separate god from the father. Jesus was married.
No way in the Bible does it say Jesus was married.
Bible based followers believe what the Bible teaches that Jesus is the second person of the Trinity. The Bible says Jesus and God the father are one.
VIEW OF THE BIBLE: MORMONISM: “Ignorant translators, careless subscribers, or designing and corrupt priests have committed many errors–many plain and precious things were deleted, in consequence of which error and falsehood poured into the various churches. One of the greatest heresies of modern Christendom is the unfounded assumption that the bible contains all the inspired teachings now extant among men.” (Mormon Doctrine p. 82, 83).
CHRISTIANITY: “All scripture is given by God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works. ” 2 Timothy 3:16-17).
BAPTISM FOR THE DEAD AND GENEALOGY
MORMONISM: Mormons research genealogies and get baptized in their temples in proxy for their dead relatives. They misinterpret 1 Corinthians 15: 29 “Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?
CHRISTIANITY: Doing genealogies is useless for the Christian. (See 1 Timothy 1:3, 4). 1 Corinthians, Chapter 15, is on the subject of the resurrection, not baptism. I Cor. 15:29 shows the folly of THOSE (not WE believers but THOSE unbelievers) who denied the resurrection, and yet practiced the pagan rite of “baptism for the dead.” Hebrews 9:27 shows that once a person is dead, he faces judgment. Nothing the living do can change this.
The Mormon church teaches that it is the only hope for salvation. If this is true, then why did Jesus suffer on the cross?
For many in this world, salvation is truly a slippery slope. Oftentimes the problem is that one does not really know if he possesses it or not. One of the greatest barriers to realizing our position in Christ is that we do not have a clear understanding of the gospel. To understand the Mormon church’s teaching regarding salvation we must first realize what it believes the gospel to be.
By definition the Mormon church teaches that the gospel is the Mormon church system and its doctrine.{20} The church and its doctrine becomes the good news–their gospel.
For the Christian it’s not an organization but a Person who represents the gospel, and that Person is God’s only begotten son, Jesus Christ. It is the life, death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ that embodies the gospel for the true Christian. Jesus is man’s savior. The Bible tells us that JESUS is the only way to God the Father.{21}
The Mormon Church is a cult because their teachings don’t line up with the Bible. Dr. Laura and others can disagree but that is the truth. I encourage all of you including those of you who are Mormons to compare the Bible and Mormon doctrine. Below are some links which I have used in writing this post.
